INDEPENDENCE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

After World War II, Britain and France gave up most of their colonial claims in the Middle East.

In 1946, Lebanon and Syria gained independence from France and Jordan earned its independence from Britain. In 1948, Jewish

leaders in British Palestine accepted the establishment of the independent Jewish state of Israel. Oman, which had been

independent since 1650, became a British protectorate in the 1890s.

The British left Oman in 1971.
