took part in the tradition to mark the opening of the London wool fair,

저 사진은 왠 나이드신 할머니께서 양을 끌고 지나가는

'세상에 이런 일이' 혹은 '동물 농장'에나 나올 법한 사진인데요.

이 사진에서 제일 중요한 요소는

위 사진의 행사가 벌어진 "장소"입니다.

그 곳은 다름아닌

전 세계를 최대의 금융 거래의 장소

City of London 한복판입니다.

가디언을 넘기다 이상한 사진 한장에 딱 꽂히고 말았다. 

대처 전 수상 정도 되는 연배의 할머니께서 옆에 고관 대작 처럼 생긴 사람들을 대동하고 양치는 장면에 

"이건 뭐지?" 하는 궁금증이 스물스물 올라왔다. 

읽어보니 London Wool Fair 개막행사. 

사진으로 봐서는 런던의 중심인 city of London 의 유래가 

양털 거래에서 시작되었다는 냄새도 풍기고 있어서 

"영국은 동네 행사 마저도 전통이 살아 있구나. 

역시 전통의 영국, 우리 동네 딸기 축제하곤 질이 다르네"

라고 생각했는데, 

올해가 겨우 2회째. 으하하 사대주의로 점철된 나의 마인드.^^; 

오늘의 배울점, 지방 행사도 STORY가 있어야 겠다~~

'나도 한번 묵어 볼까?' 하는 생각이 스멀스멀

* The Freedom of the City of London

Whilst the Honorary Freedom is indeed a recognition of lifetime achievement or high international standing, 

the Freedom of the City of London is open to a much wider section of society, 

and include many who have achieved success, recognition or celebrity in their chosen field. 

Whilst undoubtedly a privilege, strict instructions are given that the Freedom of the City of London

 should not be presented to others as being an honour or award. 

The Freedom of the City of London can be gained through membership of a livery company or by direct application 

supported by a suitably qualified proposer and seconder.

 About 1800 Freemen are admitted each year by the Clerk to the Chamberlain of the City of London 

at a simple but formal ceremony at Guildhall to which friends and family can accompany. 

A certificate is presented which will be framed on request for a small payment.

There is a long-standing tradition of the City admitting women to the Freedom. 

Although nowadays usually called Freemen as well, the historically correct way of referring to them is: Free Sisters.
