Flashpoints for water tensions
With droughts intensifying around the world, the risks of violent disputes breaking out over the control of fresh water supplies are real. This map highlights the many separate trans-border river basins that are especially vulnerable to disputes, especially the Nile, Euphrates, Indus and Mekong. These flashpoints are based on a model that predicts future tensions on the basis of past conflict and co-operation. Historically there has been at least as much co-operation as conflict, but climate change may increase the risk of tension.
