Shifting Political Boundaries
The evolution of political boundaries in Latin America began with the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas,
which gave much of the Americas to Spain and a slice of South America (Brazil) to Portugal.
The larger Spanish territory was gradually divided into viceroyalties and audiencias,
which formed the basis for many modern national boundaries.
The 1830 borders of these newly independent states were far from fixed.
Bolivia would lose its access to the coast,
Peru would gain much of Ecuador’s Amazon, and Mexico
would be stripped of its northern territory by the United States.
