Innovative living in drylands: a troglodyte house in the Matmata loess plateau, Tunisia. 

The even-grained but massive wind-blown dust deposits of loess
have provided an ideal medium in which to excavate underground houses.
The rooms that lead off this central courtyard maintain cool, even temperatures even at the hottest times of the year.
There are many examples of human ingenuity being used over the millennia to cope with
the harsh environmental conditions that can exist in dryland regions.

여기가 Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope의 촬영지입니다.

1967년전까지는 이 마을은 사람들에게 많이 알려진 곳이 아니었습니다. (유목 목동에게나 알려진 장소였다고 합니다)
그러다 1967년 이 지역에 믿기지 않는 일이 일어납니다.
무려 22일간 엄청난 비가 내려 흙이 물을 더 이상 머금을 수 없게 되자
동굴형태의 가옥들이 붕괴되는 사건이 발생하게 되었습니다.

이를 계기로 Matmata는 세상에 널리 알려지고
정부 당국은 지하가 아닌 지상에 구호를 위해 집을 지어줬는데
대부분 사람들은 계속해서 토굴 생활을 원하고
몇몇 사람들만 새로운 지상의 집으로 이주했다고 합니다.

지금은 관광지로 유명해졌는데
2004년 현재 2,116명이 살고 있습니다.
