뉴욕 롱아일랜드 바닷가의 표석

예전에 'Settling on the Coast'라는 제목으로 포스트를 올린적이 있었습니다
보스톤 앞바다의 Cape Cod 라는 곳의 갈고리 모양의 spit에 관한 내용이였습니다.

지리에 관한 수업을 대학시절에 너무 션찮게 들어서
매일 매일 인터넷에서 찾는 자료가 제게는 신기할 따름입니다.

솔직히 말씀드린다면
이거 보면서 새록새록 기억나는 정도라 아니라
모르는걸 처음으로 알게 되는게 많습니다. 쑥쓰럽습니다.^^

암튼 Cape Cod의 사주를 구성하는 모래가 빙하가 남긴 moraine에서 나온 것이라는 겁니다.

오...미국 동부 해안쪽에서는 그런 사주가 꽤 되겠구나 라고 생각했는데..

그러다 엊그제 허리케인 Irene 때문에 뉴욕쪽을 자세히 들여다 보니.
오잉? 뉴욕의 롱아일랜드의 밑부분인 롱비치의 모래도 그렇지 않을까 라고 생각을 했습니다

그러다 이걸 발견했습니다.

롱아일랜드의 Wading 리버 입구 근처의 바다에서 찍은 사진이랍니다.

During the summer, this large pegmatite boulder at Hulse Landing Beach in Wading River, New York, is covered with screaming children leaping into Long Island Sound. However, as photographed on this very cool and windy Sunday in May, the waves were crashing into the north side of the boulder quite forcefully. The southern coastline of Connecticut is visible along the horizon.

This boulder is at least 15 feet tall (~5 m), and is a glacial erratic that was most likely plucked from the bedrock beneath Long Island Sound and later deposited along the Roanoke Point Moraine during the retreat of the Wisconsinan glaciers some 20,000 years ago

. Years of wind and wave action have eroded the bluffs along this beach front, to the south of the boulder, some 50 yards (~ 46 m).
