Syria’s drought–conflict connection (2000 and 2019)
Syria has experienced severe water shortages for centuries. But one of the worst droughts in the country’s history struck between 2006 and 2011 causing 75 per cent of Syrian farms to fail and 85 per cent of livestock to perish.
The drought forced at least 1.5 million Syrians to migrate to cities like Damascus and Homs. Not long after, civil war broke out.
