Carta Marina (1539)
The largest and most accurate map of Scandinavia
of its time was produced by exiled Catholic priest
Olaus Magnus, whose mission was to share the
history, culture, and natural wonders of the north
with the rest of Europe. It was printed from nine
carved wooden blocks and shows Nordic lands
and seas teeming with life, including the monsters
described to Magnus by fishermen and sailors.
