Note: this figure, and also Figure 4.15 (=Whittaker’s climograph),
use temperature and precipitation to indicate levels of GPP,
rather than carbon sequestration per se.
The largest terrestrial carbon store is found in peatlands,
which tend to fall at the top of the diagram
(with low temperature and moderate to high rainfall).
Peatlands have very high soil storage due to low respiration rates
in waterlogged and anaerobic soils.
