Fertile but dangerous
Farming villages speckle the slopes of Mt. Merapi,
an active volcano on the island of Java, Indonesia.
Merapi has a long history of dangerous, often fatal, eruptions,
but the fertility of its soils lures farmers to its hazardous slopes.
Although volcanic soils cover just 1% of Earth’s land surface,
they support 10% of the world’s population.
